Do You Look for Signs and Coincidences?

2020.11.13

Is the practice of ‘trusting the universe’ just another way that we choose to NOT make a decision? Is it a form of giving our power away?

You know how it goes: rather than making a definitive choice or asking ourselves crucial questions, we look for signs and coincidences that verify we’re on the right track. Or not on the right track. If things don’t work out, we can ‘blame’ the universe saying, ‘it wasn’t meant to be.’ But if things do turn out, we applaud our ability to tune in and listen to the Divine! (at least, I’ve done that in the past).

There's a story in the Old Testament where Abraham sends his servant Eliezer back to their homeland to find a wife for Isaac. When Eliezer arrives at the city of Nahor, he finds a spring and prays: “Hashem… let the maiden to whom I say, ‘Please lower your jar that I may drink,’ and who replies, ‘Drink, and I will also  water your camels,’ let her be the one to whom you have decreed for your servant, for Isaac…”

Is Eliezar taking this opportunity NOT to make a decision on his own? Is he relying on an external sign to tell him what to do, rather than using his own intelligence to find the right wife for Isaac?

Reading carefully, Eliezer says that she should offer water to him and his camels. In other words, she should be a kind, caring, and generous person.

He’s not giving away his power in favor of superstition. He’s actually specifying the exact criteria by which to make his decision - she should be kind, caring, and generous. He doesn’t want Isaac to marry someone who will steal his money and his livestock! If she doesn’t have these qualities, he’s not interested.

If you want to live with clarity and purpose, if you want to truly say “yes” to your life, you’ve got to be able to say a clear “no” as well. The “yes” and the “no” go together!

Saying “no” can be difficult. Feelings of guilt for letting others down, the list of ‘shoulds’ you tell yourself, or even a lack of trust in yourself can get in the way of saying “no.” Take your power in your hand and meet your destiny! Don’t be blown around by the winds of fate!

Once you’ve made your decision, trust whatever happens next. Surrender to what happens. Ultimately, we have no control over how things unfold, but we always have the power to choose.

Are there decisions you are avoiding? Do you ever blame others for your inability to follow through on your own decisions? Are you waiting for the right time, the right sign, or the right people before you make a decision?

And what if you really aren’t quite sure what decision to make? It’s okay to be uncertain. It can be wonderful and magical to go with the flow. Life can be a magical tapestry of synchronicity and blessings. But eventually, the magic ends and you find yourself drifting aimlessly and going nowhere. Or even worse, heading toward a collision.

We are all on a completely unique path. We are all a once-in-a-lifetime cosmic event. And we all have our own decisions to make. And here’s an easy decision for us all to make:
the decision to fully embrace this moment; to stay in the present.

What is this moment like? Is it tense? Is it calm and peaceful? Is it difficult? Is it painful? Is it joyful? Are you willing to decide to say “yes” to this moment, just as it is? This is actually one of the most important decisions for you to make. Without this decision, there is dissatisfaction, frustration, struggle, and unrest.

To fully embrace this moment, the “yes” and the “no” must be this: “yes” to what is, “no” to resisting what is. And yet, if a feeling of ‘resisting what is’ arises, you must say “yes” to the presence of that feeling- because in that moment, “resistance to what is”- is what is! (are you dizzy yet?)

So, just for this moment, let’s decide to say ‘yes’ to what is and see where it leads. Let the magic and mystery unfold!

Creating a practice to stay in the present takes effort and you might need help, guidance, or encouragement. If you’re ready to shift to something new, I can help. Who knows, it might just be what you need.

Say "YES" to yourself and let the magic and mystery unfold!

Rock On
