Is Chat GPT Your New Life Coach?

Can we talk?
I didn’t even know asking ChatGPT for life coaching advice was a “thing.” Well, it’s not a “thing” for me. So, let me ask you, have you used Chat GPT for life coaching (no judgement, I promise)?
As a spiritually-based life coach myself, am I replaceable by a machine? Is this the future of personal growth? Can it help with real transformation or is it just the latest craze (a techy detour so to speak) that helps us look like we’re on the path toward transformation without doing the work needed?
What’s Going On?
Apparently, people are using ChatGPT to:
Talk through limiting beliefs
Set goals
Create affirmations
Uncover life purpose
Build morning routines
Rewrite break-up texts to sound more evolved (how evolved are you if you have to break-up with a text and not in person?)
Why?
Well, it’s mostly free, it doesn’t judge, and it’s always awake. Unlike me who puts my phone on “do-not-disturb” at 9 p.m. because “boundaries.”
But my bigger question is this: is ChatGPT really cut out for life coaching? Can it hold space like a human coach can? Can it challenge your stories with compassion and curiosity? Can it lovingly call you out when you’re hiding behind your excuses? Or is it more like that overly enthusiastic friend who’s full of quotes but doesn’t really get what you’re going through?
I asked Chat GPT to give me 5 reasons to use it for life coaching and 5 reasons not to use it. Here’s what it came up with (emojis are mine):
5 Reasons to Use ChatGPT for Life Coaching
It’s Always Available (Even at 3 AM) 🕒
Insomnia is real. Sometimes you’re lying there thinking about whether you’ve lived up to your potential, or if your middle school art teacher was right after all. ChatGPT is there. Bright-eyed, bushy-tailed, and ready to walk you through your existential crisis.
It’s Judgment-Free 🤐
You can tell ChatGPT that you procrastinated all day by alphabetizing your spice rack and watching reruns of Golden Girls, and it will not flinch. No sighs. No raised eyebrows. Just a kind, “Here are five ways to re-engage with your goals.”
It’s Fast and Flexible ⚡
Need 20 journaling prompts on self-worth? Done. Want help rewording your negative self-talk into an affirmation that doesn’t make you roll your eyes? Got it. ChatGPT is like a brainstorming ninja—quick, clever, and endlessly patient.
Great for Structure-Lovers 📈
If you thrive on steps, systems, and frameworks, ChatGPT can build a personalized plan that’s part Tony Robbins, part Google Calendar. (Just be prepared—it will suggest a morning routine.)
Affordable (aka Free-ish) 💰
Therapy, coaching, retreats—they’re amazing and they can add up. ChatGPT gives people access to support who may not otherwise be able to afford it. That’s a big deal.
5 Reasons NOT to Use ChatGPT for Life Coaching
It Doesn’t Actually Know You 👭
It knows words. It knows patterns. But it doesn’t know your lived experience. It doesn’t see your tears or feel your joy. It can’t read between the lines or offer you that loving silence when you need to just be for a minute.
No Accountability Partner Here 🤝
You can tell ChatGPT your goals. It will cheer you on. But it won’t text you Wednesday morning to ask why you ghosted your own dreams. A real coach holds you accountable (and lovingly nudges you when you fall off track).
Emotional Intelligence? Still in Beta. 💖
Sure, it’s polite. Even wise-sounding. But emotional nuance is tough for AI. If you're going through grief, trauma, or complex relational dynamics, a human coach (or therapist!) is absolutely necessary.
You Might Miss the Magic of Being Seen 👀
There’s something sacred about having another human say, “I see you.” Especially when you’re raw, messy, or halfway through a breakthrough. That kind of heart-to-heart resonance? AI just isn’t there yet.
Information ≠ Transformation 💡
AI is amazing for giving information. But transformation comes from insight, connection, and action. And sometimes you need a human soul to walk with you as you rewrite the story of your life.
So…Should You Use It?
ChatGPT can be a powerful tool—like a journal that talks back or a brainstorming partner who’s always on call. But don’t only use it.
If you're serious about healing, evolving, and living in alignment with your soul, real connection still matters. Hire a coach. Talk to a therapist. Cry with your best friend. Listen to your own wisdom.
In my personal experience with my own clients, it’s been my presence and intention combined with their presence and intention that brings the awareness, the awakening, and the transformation - you know, the magic. And you just don’t get that with Artificial Intelligence.
So, if you need help with affirmations or your gratitude list, Chat GPT could be your ‘gal.’ However, sometimes you need an audible reminder that you’re not broken, you’re becoming. Sometimes you need a real human to recognize you and invite you to explore your beauty and possibilities. And sometimes you need a real human to help you crush your excuses so you can amplify your impact, boost your self-confidence, and connect with your calling.
You know what ChatGPT is also good for? Creating an action figure of yourself. Here’s mine.
My action figure is a trusted guide and mentor who helps women move beyond the negative voices in their head so they can stop settling and and start experiencing the magic of their dreams again. She drives a silver VW Beetle (with eyelashes), loves cruises, has season tickets to the Spokane Indians (High A Affiliate of the Colorado Rockies), and is blessed by 2 adorable cats. Most importantly, she helps people answer the questions "why am I here?" by guiding them to reveal greater meaning, embody higher purpose, and awaken to deeper joy.
