The Courage to Dream Big

“Life is short, live bold! Be heard, be you, dream big, take risks, don’t wait.”
~ Misty Gibbs

I’ve been thinking a lot about big dreams lately.

Growing up, I was never encouraged to dream big. My parents didn’t dream big – I think they were just trying to do the best they could. For them, success was owning a home and having a steady job and taking occasional family vacations.

I think my dad’s big dreams involved me; he wanted me to be a doctor or a lawyer. That was his dream. I just wanted to be liked, have friends, and fit in.

Then I got married and settled into a life where any dreams revolved around what my husband wanted. The problem is that he didn’t have big dreams either. At least none that he shared with me.

And then just like my dad, I passed all my big dreams onto my daughter.

Needless to say, that worked as well for me as it did for my dad. So I had to start dreaming my own big dreams, but I had no practice. I was mired in small dreams, not daring to even consider anything amazing. And guess what? Nothing really amazing happened.

This isn’t to say that good things didn’t happen. I did have success at work. I was able to purchase my own home and also buy 7 rental properties in four states. I got my ministerial license and founded a church. I started doing some coaching long before ‘coaching’ became part of our everyday language. I’ve been featured in two books, interviewed on radio, and been a guest speaker at churches and retreats. And now I have the good fortune to live one of the most beautiful places…Sedona.

Back to big dreams.

After finding that putting my big dreams onto my daughter didn’t work, I was left with trying to create my own big dreams. But since I didn’t have a frame of reference, I started with setting goals that I ‘thought’ I could do. That meant small goals and small dreams.

Since I didn’t have my own big dreams, I loved coaxing and drawing the big dreams out of my clients. I was able to catch the excitement and allure of having a vision way beyond the ordinary. And still I struggled with my own big dreams. I struggled with ideas that perhaps I was being selfish and egotistical in my desires.

And did I mention all the classes, workshops, and coaching I paid for in search of my big dreams? Looking back, I can see I was still trying to fit my dreams into what other people thought should be my big dreams. But those dreams didn’t fit with me and I thought there was something wrong with me. I thought I was incapable of having any big dreams of my own.

And then it happened.

I let go. I relaxed. My mind opened. My imagination opened. I began to dream (and daydream) again. And now all I want to do is talk about and write about living boldly, living big, taking risks, being audacious and outrageous, and being wholly, fully, and completely ourselves.

Why am I sharing this?

I know (I hope) I’m not the only one who has trouble getting past their history or their current circumstances to see what’s possible. Maybe it’s a fear of failure. Maybe it’s a fear of being disappointed. Maybe it’s a fear of not being able to live up to expectations. Maybe it’s that we don’t have any role models. Or maybe it’s that we don’t have any practice.

Whatever the reason, I want to encourage you to keep at it. It’s okay if you don’t know how to get there. That’s the point of the big dream. But, oh how exciting to take those first steps. Possibilities abound. Choices galore. A chance to feel the excitement and exhilaration of what it would be like to show up fully and live out loud. To experience the complete satisfaction and joy of knowing you are living on purpose and making the difference that only you can make.

I’d love to hear your big dream.

And if you need some help in getting started, let’s chat.

Have some fun, stay aware, and rock on!

Exchange the Good for the Better

Growth is attained through an exchange of the old for the new, of the good for the better.
~ Charles Haanel
Picture
We have goals and dreams because we want to feel better, make a bigger impact, experience better and more fulfilling relationships, attain financial freedom, explore the world and travel, and share our talents in our unique way.

In other words, we want to live fully, live passionately, and live freely.

But we are also very reluctant to let go of what we currently have. Refusing to let go of the things – whether those are ideas or physical things – is actually a belief in lack and not-enoughness.

Think about it.

Let’s say I want a new sofa. As long as my current sofa is functional, I’m not overly inspired or motivated to buy a new one. Or maybe I’ll try and sell my old one first. Why can’t I just donate it or give it to someone who needs it….for free?

The idea of squeezing money out of every little thing tends to keep us limited in our financial thinking. We tell ourselves that it’s good business. We tell ourselves that we paid so much money for it and we don’t want to throw that away. What if we could just be generous instead?

Don’t get me wrong, bartering, selling things on eBay, and having garage sales are fine and dandy. I’ve done it myself. As a matter of fact, I have a few things in my garage right now that I want to sell on eBay. Nice things. Things I paid a fair amount of money for. Collectible things.

But wait!

Couldn’t I just donate them to charity or see if someone I know would like them? OMG!! I’d be throwing away money! Well, the money I spent for these items was spent over 20 years ago. It is long gone. Hasta la vista.

So my motivation for selling these things is to recoup some of the money spent years ago. Lack thinking. Maybe it would bring me more joy to find someone I know who would LOVE the collector’s plates and original artwork I want to sell.

I want to grow. I want a larger income. I want to make a bigger impact.

But I will not be growing in either income or impact if I don’t let go of my small thinking. It’s that simple (in theory, at least – a little more challenging in practice.)

I’ve had a daily gratitude practice for years where I review my day just before I fall asleep and find at least three things to be grateful for. It’s a great way to fall asleep and I wake up with a sense of contentment.

But for the past several weeks, I’ve added to this practice. I make sure to review the ways I am letting go of my limiting ideas.
  • How many times did I catch myself looking around and judging what I see as the truth instead of seeing beyond to what’s possible?
  • How many times did I read my goals, look at my vision board, and imagine the new, the good, and the better?
  • Did I take action that was ‘good enough’ instead of waiting for everything to be ‘perfect?’

And I see progress in my thinking.

I’m not a multi-millionaire (yet); I’m not speaking to thousands (yet, see my video here); but I’m growing step-by-step and day-by-day, just like you.

Step one: exchange the old for the new.
  • What one old idea (or item) can you exchange for the new?
  • What new idea can you open up to?
  • What one habit can you change?
  • What one fear can you look in the eye and face?
  • What one talent can you finally claim is yours?

If you need some help in figuring out that step, let’s chat.

Until next time....

Have some fun, stay aware, and rock on!

How to Think Like a Billionaire

6/12/2017

"Let’s set the record straight once and for all: Anyone can become wealthy.
It has nothing to do with your education or where you come from. It’s not what you do that guarantees wealth, it’s what you are.”
~ Steve Siebold

Picture
Andrew Carnegie. John Rockefeller. Cornelius Vanderbilt. Donald Trump.

If you hear those names, what do you think? Greedy? Robber barons? Selfish? Take advantage of people? Power Mongers?

Yes, there are a few wealthy people we will profess to admire: Steve Jobs and Richard Branson spring to mind.

Many of us “normal” people have an attraction / repulsion toward the very wealthy. We would love to live larger, take grand vacations, buy the car of our dreams, and be able to provide a life without lack for our family.

On the other hand, we also harshly judge how the wealthy spend, or don’t spend, their money; we think they should be more philanthropic; we think they should show more humanity (which is why we adore Steve Jobs and Richard Branson) – in other words, we want the wealthy people to have the sensibilities of the non-wealthy.

But. We. Want. More. Money. Too.

Our mind is conflicted. We want more money, but we decry those with it. We want what they have, but we don’t like them. Ugh!

If we want to jump to the next level on our financial ladder, it requires a mindset shift. Maybe we’re not exactly looking for a get-rich-quick scheme, however, most of want a system or a process with concrete steps to follow in order to get us on the fast track to financial freedom. Wealthy people don’t think that way.

How do wealthy people think differently than ‘normal’ people?

Everyone in the world will tell you to look at the facts and be realistic. Maybe that’s the world for ‘normal’ people. I think wealthy people are busy making up the facts they want to see and then they focus on that. For them, the universe if fluid and pliable.

Wealthy people dream big dreams. They’ve learned to ignore the skeptics and their own internal Monkey Mind chatter. Working toward the goal or dream is a learning process.

“Look at the world with wide-eyed enthusiasm, believe you are more powerful than the
problems that confront you, and dream big.”
 ~ Richard Branson
Picture
Wealthy people work hard to make something succeed, but once they realize it won’t succeed, they quickly forget about it and move to something else. Lesson learned.

This is different than giving up too soon. It’s more about knowing when to quit. They don’t continue to put time and energy (and money) on an idea that isn’t successful. They understand every idea and every venture isn’t going to work out. They’ve learn to celebrate the successes and failures.

Wealthy people have an entrepreneur mentality and not a consumer mentality. They ask questions like, “How can I make this better?” They have an action mentality and are problem solvers. Wealthy people see potential and disregard the problems.

Speaking of problems, successful people focus on goals and possibilities while ‘normal’ people tend to focus on problems and failures. Wealthy people don’t view failure like the rest of us. For them, it’s just a bump in the road. Learn and move on.

Wealthy people view failure as a stepping stone to success. ‘Normal’ people can become paralyzed with fear when starting something new after a failure. They identify themselves with the failure. They’ll say to themselves, “I’ve tried so many times, how is this time going to be any different?” And with that question, comes the answer: “It won’t.” Not until you change your mindset.

I remember reading about Donald Trump telling the Wall Street Journal, “I’ve never lost in my life” and thinking to myself, “Is he delusional?” Maybe it isn’t being delusional, maybe it’s a strategy for success. What's your strategy?

Dream big, focus on the goals and possibilities, work hard but learn when to let go, learn to view failure in a different way, and recognize that ‘what you see’ can be changed.

Bam! Thinking like a billionaire.

Until next time
Have some fun, stay aware, and rock on!

The Monster Within

"Monsters are real, and ghosts are real too.
They live inside us, and sometimes, they win."
                   ~ Stephen King
Picture
I was watching my coach, Christian Mickelsen on a live stream a couple of days ago...

And even though he makes multi-millions of dollars each year, he shared that he had a prosperity breakthrough not that long ago.

It was a few years ago when he was visiting Sedona and he went into one of the many crystal shops we have here and he spotted a huge amethyst stalactite. Price tag: $18,000.

He thought he heard the price was $12,000 and he was negotiating back and forth with the sales person and he was fixated on getting the best deal.

That was his belief system: I must bargain and get the best deal possible!

This belief was a monster that lived inside and he didn't even know it!

Ultimately, the salesperson called the owner on the telephone and the owner told Christian that he could have it for $14,000 and that would include shipping to his home in California.

In that moment something shifted.

He realized that his lifelong programming to get the best deal or walk away was fear-based and lack thinking. In that moment he saw things differently; he saw a world of abundance and plenty.

He gave up the struggle to bargain for a lower price and he simply said to the owner, "Great, I'll take it." And he went on to say that he could literally hear the owner's jaw drop!

So, even though Christian is a multi-millionaire, some of his early conditioning still lingered. And since he made that shift in thinking, making money and impacting thousands of lives has been easier and more joyful.

These old, limiting beliefs in lack can be like ghosts and monsters that live inside of us. And when they win, we struggle, we deal with thoughts of inadequacy, we wallow in inferiority thinking, and life is endured and not enjoyed.

The trouble is that we don't always recognize them for the monsters and ghosts that they are. In Christian's mind, the idea of getting the best deal was thought of as good business acumen and having financial integrity. But those ideas were merely smoke screens for the real culprit: a belief in lack and not enough.

It was one of his blind spots.

We all have hidden beliefs that sabotage our success and growth. And we've even fooled ourselves into thinking that some of these beliefs actually help us. But once we reveal them, a shift can happen in a moment. If you'd like some help in uncovering them, let's chat.
