Playing with our Passion

I’m in the process of creating a ‘signature talk.’

I am setting my intention to be ready to provide my own webinar or even speak at an event somewhere. The problem comes when I need to figure out what I want to talk about. What am I passionate about?

I’m passionate about helping people tap into their own brilliance and see their own possibilities. I’m passionate about helping people find and follow their dreams. I’m passionate about teaching spiritual principles. And yet, this passion doesn’t quite make for a good (and succinct) signature talk because this passion is too broad.

I read this quote from Ernest Holmes yesterday:
“We should never watch to see what another is doing or how he is doing it, for when we do this we are limiting our own possibilities to the range of another’s vision. Principle is not bound by precedent, and our good is not limited or conditioned by any good that has ever been manifest. We should confidently expect a greater good than we have ever experienced, or than we have ever known of anyone experiencing.”

I don’t know how many times I’ve read that before, but it really hit home for me yesterday. I realized I’ve done just that most of my entire life – I’ve watched others to see what they were doing and how they were doing it and chose a goal or a vision based on that. Or, I’ve allowed the goals and dreams of my family to become my own goals and dreams.

In other words, I’ve been limiting my own possibilities.

Of course, deep down I knew that already. Why do you think my Facebook page is called Possibility Dr.? Why do you think I end all of my talks with the words “opening our hearts and minds to infinite possibilities?” Because, I need the reminder!

So, how can I narrow down my passion for helping people recognize and embrace their own greatness (feel free to comment below)? I’ve decided I’m going to start with the basics: goals.

Goals? Sort of boring and not too sexy, right?

One of the common themes I find during my coaching is that we have problems with goals, especially those goals related to our purpose and our passion. Not the goals that are “to-do’s”, but the juicy ones that get us excited. The goals that are tied into our values, our essence, and our genius.

It’s as if we have a mental block and refuse to acknowledge our gifts.

And it shows up as half-assed goals that don’t rock our world. And I’m quite good at helping people unearth that brilliance and help them identify the passion that might have been buried.

Yesterday, I asked 5 questions to help us think outside the box and to focus our mind in a different direction. See if any of these questions are helpful for you:
  1. You win millions of dollars in an unusual lottery. Here are the rules: you must donate all of the money within one year. You can give the money to one person or organization or you can divvy it up. Who gets the money?
  2. Magically, you can grant your very best quality to every human being on the planet. If you choose your ability to listen deeply, then 8 billion people will suddenly have the ability to listen deeply too. You have many great qualities, but you need to select just one quality that you would want for everyone. Which one is it?
  3. You can have any job in the world, but there’s a catch: you’ll need to work this job five days/week for the rest of your life. What job would you choose?
  4. You have a year off to study any subject. Your schedule has been cleared and all your expenses have been paid. But you must dedicate 40 hours/week to your study. What subject do you select?
  5. You’ve been elected the Leader of the World and you have widespread support. You decide to focus your first 3 months in office on your #1 initiative. What is it? What is the big change you want to bring to the world?

Give some thought to these questions and see if they don’t pique your interest and help shed some clarity on your own passion. And remember these words by Nelson Mandela:

"There is no passion to be found playing small--in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living."

 Until next time....

Have some fun, stay aware, and rock on!

What I Learned from Lice

When my daughter was in the first grade, there was an outbreak of lice. Sure enough, she brought them home with her.

When we researched options and local treatment centers, there were two schools of thought: one said we needed to follow extensive home cleaning instructions and the other said we didn't need to do any of that once our daughter had been treated.

One center told us we had to wash her sheets, blankets, and clothes; the other center told us that was unnecessary.

Not only that, but both treatment centers cited scientific evidence to support their own particular manner of treating lice. They each had proof that was contradictory to each other. Which one was right? Or should we just go down to our local store and buy a bottle of Nix?

Clearly, one had to be right and the other wrong - - right? But which one? I recently received a newsletter from Karen Curry which reminded me of our long-ago problem with lice and she’s going through the same issue. Clearly, not much has changed in 20 years.

Anyway, which treatment center was right? I don't really know the answer because ultimately, we followed our intuition and everything worked out fine.

So, what did I learn from lice?

There are a lot of 'truths' out there and just because someone says it is based on scientific research, it doesn't mean it will be the 'truth' in my reality. Quantum physics tells us that just the act of observing something, changes it. And whatever meaning I give to that 'something' can change it toward my meaning.

I need to follow my own rules. How about you?

I have allowed my own inner genius to be silenced while I have followed the advice, suggestions, and rules of others. I have allowed my own Monkey Mind to keep me confused, and therefore stuck, as I tried to process the contradictory ideas I was getting from various experts.

No Growth in the Comfort Zone

Let us feel that our purposes are animated and inspired
from on high and then let us go forth and make our dream
come true in human experience.
 ~ Ernest Holmes

There's no growth when we are firmly planted in our comfort zone.

And there's very little courage there, either.

We all like to think we are committed to our visions, dreams, and goals. And what a rude awakening it might be when we discover what we've really been committed to is LACK.
  • lack of love
  • lack of money
  • lack of purpose
  • lack of success
  • lack of fun
  • lack of health
  • lack of freedom
How can you tell if you've been mistakenly committed to lack? What do you talk about? What are you experiencing? What do you see in the world?

If we want to go forth and make our dreams come true in the human experience, we may need a bit of courage to help us move out of our comfort zone. We may need to take some action we've never taken before. We may need to think some thoughts we've never thought before. And sometimes, that isn't so easy.

Think about it for a minute. Playing it safe is easy; staying in our comfort zone is easy; hoping for the best and expecting the worst is easy. But what is that really saying about us? We don't have what it takes to do what's required to step into our brilliance. We have to make things happen on our own and we don't want to put forth the effort. We're afraid we'll fail.

Yes, we all want things to come to us 'easily and effortlessly.' And if it isn't easy, we make excuses that it isn't meant to be. What if that's not true? What if we decide what's meant to be? What if we end up exuberant and excited simply by putting forth a bit of effort instead of waiting for the easy?

What if?

What if you just needed a nudge in the right direction? What if you just needed a new seed thought to get you moving? Maybe I can be that nudge.

What if you click here and schedule that appointment for a Breakthrough Session?

Call to Action: In the next 24 - 48 hours:
  • Write down between 1 - 3 of your dreams, goals, and desires that are still unfilled
  • Write down your reasons or excuses that these remain unfulfilled?
  • Do those reasons allow you to stay firmly planted in your comfort zone?
  • What ONE small step could you take to move forward? Would you need some courage to take that small step?
